This stunning 7-mile circular walk starts from the Winscar Reservoir car park and takes in the dramatic moorland scenery surrounding Winscar and Snailsden Reservoirs. It’s a route best enjoyed on a clear day — ideal for keen photographers looking to capture expansive views, particularly facing east.
Be prepared: this is a moderately challenging route and can feel remote in places. Allow around 4 hours at a relaxed pace, and bring along refreshments and plenty of water to keep you going.
The first half of the route crosses open moorland, which is both beautiful and quite exposed — so dress appropriately for the conditions. Walking boots are essential, and if you’re heading out into wilder weather, a paper map and compass are highly recommended as mobile signal may be unreliable in parts of the route.
On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with fantastic far-reaching views and the peaceful solitude of the high moors — a perfect contrast to the still waters of the reservoirs below.
This walk offers a great escape for those looking to explore a quieter corner of the Peak District with just the right mix of challenge, scenery, and tranquility.
